Who can do an EICR, and how to check an electrician is registered
Updated
An EICR for a rented home must be done by a qualified and competent person, and the quickest check is the electrician's registration with a scheme such as NICEIC, NAPIT or ELECSA. England and Wales have about 42,000 registered electricians.

Where to check
- Registered Competent Person Electrical
- One search across the government-authorised electrical schemes in England and Wales (electricalcompetentperson.co.uk).
- NICEIC
- Its own contractor search (niceic.com).
- NAPIT
- More than 20,000 registered installers across its trades (NAPIT member search).
- SELECT
- The electrical trade body in Scotland (select.org.uk).
GOV.UK put the number of registered electricians in England and Wales at 42,000 when it launched the cross-scheme search (GOV.UK).
A registration is with a scheme, not a government licence. Check the firm's name on the scheme's own search on the day you book.
